Chakkamkulam Appu Marar

Thrissur: Noted `Melam' artist Chakkamkulam Appu Marar, 82, died at his residence in Peruvanam here on Tuesday morning.He was the main player in developing the trend of Panchari melam using only one stick instead of two. His first performance was held at the age of 14 in Anthikkad Karthyayani temple.He also proved his forte in Sopana Sangeetham, Chenda and Thimila. He was honoured with Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Awards and a host of other awards. He is also the first recepient of Pallavoor Award instituted by State Government . Appu Marar, son of Chakkamkulangara Marath Kunjukutty Marasyar and Pandarathil Narayana Marar, learned his first lessons from his father himself.Marar is survived by wife Vishalakshi, children Peruvanam Satheeshan, Peruvanam Prakashan (both melam artists), Unnikrishnan, Ramkumar (both working in Ahmmedabad) and Lathika.
